France tightens French language standards for 2026 exams amid common spelling errors

A French Ministry of Education circular issued in March 2024 mandates that the quality of written French be assessed in all subjects of the national diploma (DNB) and the baccalauréat starting in the 2026 session. Under the new rules, errors such as the incorrect subjunctive form “pour que tu puisse” – which should be “pour que tu puisses” – can lower a student's overall score because they affect the perceived mastery of grammar across disciplines.

Separate analysis of a frequent orthographic mistake shows that many writers still write “tu m’envois” instead of the correct “tu m’envoies”. The persistence of this error is linked to digital autocorrect tools that fail to flag the verb form when it is confused with the noun “envoi”. The mistake is considered disqualifying in professional correspondence and can negatively influence job applications, highlighting how everyday language use is impacted by both educational policy and technology.
