France bans unsolicited telemarketing calls from Aug 11 2026

France will prohibit unsolicited telemarketing calls beginning on 11 August 2026. Under the new law, businesses may contact consumers only with prior, explicit consent that can be withdrawn at any time and is valid for a maximum of one year. Companies must retain proof of consent for three years. Violations carry fines of up to €75,000 for individuals and €375,000 for firms per illegal call.

The measure replaces the Bloctel opt‑out register with an opt‑in regime, ending the self‑registration system that required consumers to list their numbers. Exceptions apply for calls related to existing contracts, subscription services such as newspapers, and certain sectors like energy‑renovation projects. The French government estimates three‑quarters of the population receive at least one unwanted sales call each week.

Authorities warned that the ban could affect 40,000‑50,000 jobs in Moroccan call centres that serve the French market, highlighting broader economic implications beyond France.
