France to distribute 100 euro fuel subsidy starting October 16
The French government has announced a 100 euro fuel subsidy to assist motorists facing high fuel costs. Minister of Public Accounts David Amiel stated that the first payments will be automatically distributed to eligible individuals starting October 16. Approximately 1.6 million French citizens are expected to receive this aid without needing to take any administrative action.
New beneficiaries can submit applications via impots.gouv.fr starting October 22. To qualify, the government has raised income thresholds: 2,050 euros net for a single person, 4,070 euros for a couple, 5,087 euros with one child, and 6,100 euros with two children. Applicants must also meet commuting requirements, such as traveling at least 15 kilometers between home and work or 8,000 kilometers annually.
Maud Bregeon, Minister Delegate for Energy, estimated the aid provides an average of 40 centimes per liter over two months. This follows a previous measure of 20 centimes per liter. Additionally, the government expects a price drop of 12 to 18 centimes per liter due to the release of 10 million barrels of diesel from strategic stocks. While the government implements these measures, some political figures have criticized the approach, arguing for direct price controls on oil companies instead of subsidies.
