France to tighten oversight of waste management eco-organismes
The French government is moving to tighten oversight of eco-organismes, the entities funded by industry to support local authorities in waste collection and recycling. Mathieu Lefèvre, the Minister Delegate for Ecological Transition, stated that the governance of these organizations must be reviewed to curb inflationary eco-contributions and improve environmental outcomes.
Currently, these contributions total approximately 3 billion euros across all sectors, with projections suggesting they could reach between 9 and 10 billion euros by 2030. To address this, the government has launched audits to ensure the proper use of financial resources and plans to double the staff dedicated to monitoring polluter-pays sectors to 30 people in the upcoming budget.
Rationalizing these expenditures is intended to free up at least 100 million euros to assist local authorities in implementing government plans to reduce and better recycle plastic packaging.
