France to Vote on Euthanasia Legalisation Bill on July 15
The French Parliament is scheduled to vote on a bill that would legalise euthanasia on 15 July 2026. The draft, described by its proponents as the most permissive in the world, has already been rejected three times by the Senate, prompting renewed appeals from doctors, nurses, pharmacists and religious figures to persuade undecided deputies to oppose it.
Opponents warn that the proposal removes key safeguards for vulnerable groups, including the elderly, disabled and people with mental health issues. Parliamentary voting tallies show a close split: in May 2025 305 members voted for the text and 199 against; by February 2026 the count was 299‑226; and on 1 July the balance stood at 295‑232. The debate has intensified, with public petitions, prayers and media campaigns urging a rejection of the legislation.
