France Universités rejects proposed university tuition hike

Following the Assises du financement de l’université, a proposal to sharply raise student registration fees in French universities sparked debate. France Universités, the body representing university leaders and headed by president Lamri Adoui, opposed the measure, calling it premature without a prior overhaul of the student‑aid and scholarship system. The organization argued that families should not be asked to pay more while support for modest‑income students remains insufficient.

The controversy underscores broader financing challenges for French higher education, including rising student numbers, expanding research demands, costly infrastructure upgrades, digital transformation and ecological transition. France Universités warned that current public funding falls short of these needs and noted that France still lags behind the EU target of allocating 3 % of GDP to research.
