France updates labor protections and studies heatwave adaptations

The French Ministry of Labour is updating its regulatory framework regarding labor protections. A new guide has been released to replace the 2019 edition, providing a roadmap for employers, labor inspectors, and staff representatives concerning the termination or transfer of contracts for protected employees. These employees, including members of the Social and Economic Committee (CSE) and union delegates, receive special status to ensure independence and prevent retaliation during their mandates.

In a separate effort to address climate change, the French Minister of Labour, Jean-Pierre Farandou, visited Madrid alongside social partners to study Spanish methods for protecting workers during heatwaves. The goal is to develop a national framework that allows for adaptations such as condensed hours or climate shelters without halting economic activity. While French unions noted that Spain has an advantage built through social dialogue, the minister acknowledged that legislative paths may be complex due to the upcoming presidential election.
