France's Culture Ministry Calls for Temporary Removal of Vulnerable Museum Items

Nine months after the October 2025 heist at the Louvre's Galerie d'Apollon, in which eight crown jewels were stolen and remain missing, the French Ministry of Culture unveiled a 33‑point plan to create a "culture of security" in museums. The plan, announced by Minister Catherine Pégard, calls for mapping the most sensitive sites, random security inspections, enhanced staff training and, most prominently, the temporary removal of the most vulnerable objects from display and their storage in secure locations. Recent thefts – a Celtic‑era gold necklace from the Vix treasure in Châtillon‑sur‑Seine and jewelry from the Lalique Museum in Wingen‑sur‑Moder – have caused losses estimated at over €4.5 million. A legislative proposal by deputy Alexandre Portier is also being prepared to reinforce museum security. The Louvre's Galerie d'Apollon has reopened to the public but without any objects on display.
