Italy‑Spain theft ring & Louvre security measures

Overview

The trans‑European theft ring that surfaced in late May 2026 kept its spree, hitting the Lalique Museum (≈ €4‑5 million) on 5 July, a jewellery shop in Harburg the same night, a safe in Mussolente on 10 July, and the Celletta sanctuary in Argenta and the Casa della Solidarità in Coccaglio, where silver ornaments were taken and two Albanian suspects were detained.

Parallel investigations into the October 2025 Louvre daylight robbery progressed. On 20 July the two primary perpetrators, Abdulaj N. and Gelamalah A., testified about their hire, payment and the use of a hydraulic platform, grinder and service lift to breach the Apollo Gallery. Four Paris‑region suspects were later arrested, and searches were coordinated with Belgian and Italian police, though none of the stolen crown jewels (valued at about €88 million) have been recovered.

France’s Ministry of Culture unveiled a 33‑point “culture of security” plan, calling for mapping of high‑risk sites, random inspections, enhanced staff training and the temporary removal of the most vulnerable objects to secure storage. A legislative proposal to reinforce museum security is being prepared. Recent thefts – the Vix gold necklace and the Lalique Museum robbery – underscore the urgency.

The Louvre’s Galerie d’Apollon reopened nine months after the heist, now displaying only Empress Eugénie’s tiara in a fortified location while the remaining jewels stay locked in a high‑security vault. The historic baroque space functions again as a 17th‑century reception room. Director Christophe Leribault’s “New Renaissance” programme continues, with plans to move the Mona Lisa to a new subterranean sanctuary by 2031.
