Gironde megafire near Bordeaux declared fixed, evacuations largely lifted
The megafire that swept the Gironde department near Bordeaux burned roughly 42,000 hectares and forced about 224,000 residents to evacuate. After ten days of fighting, the prefecture announced the blaze is now "fixed" – contained within its perimeter – and the fire has not expanded further. Hot spots remain on the ground, but the situation is described as stable.
Reinforcements from Ukraine, Lithuania and French Polynesia have been deployed, and a national reconstruction coordinator has been appointed to oversee recovery. Psychological support teams have been mobilised for the roughly 5,000 firefighters who have been on the front line.
In the neighboring Var department, a separate fire that burned about 1,800 hectares has been stabilised; around 2,500 people were evacuated there. Overall, the French government says the major wildfires are under control but warns that conditions remain volatile.
