France weather: unseasonable warmth followed by sharp temperature drop

France is experiencing a significant weather shift in mid-October 2026. Initially, a period of unseasonable warmth is expected, with temperatures in the south-west potentially reaching 31°C, mirroring conditions typically seen in June.

However, this warmth will be short-lived. Starting Friday, October 16, a major weather transition will occur as a perturbation moves through the country, accompanied by a shift to north-northwest winds. This change is expected to bring a sharp drop in temperatures, with some regions potentially losing more than 10°C by the weekend of October 17-18.

Longer-term seasonal forecasts suggest an exceptionally mild autumn for France, with November temperatures potentially reaching up to 3°C above normal. This mildness may be followed by a wet start to winter, characterized by increased precipitation levels across much of the country through early 2027.
