Gironde Wildfire Forces Evacuations of Over 220,000, Threatens Bordeaux FAST-MOVING
A massive wildfire near Bordeaux in the Gironde department has burned about 42,000 hectares (≈420 km²) of forest and bushland, destroyed roughly 240 homes and prompted large‑scale evacuations. More than 220,000 residents and tourists were moved to safety, including a precautionary order for an additional 4,000 people around the Lacanau resort. Authorities have completed 103 km of tactical firebreaks and deployed about 2,500 firefighters, 18 aerial firefighting aircraft and 1,500 soldiers; 93 firefighters were injured. The A63 highway remains partially closed and rail traffic south of Bordeaux is suspended except toward Toulouse. President Emmanuel Macron warned that the coming weeks will be difficult, while deputy Hadrien Clouet called for an extraordinary session of the French National Assembly to approve emergency funding for fire‑fighting resources. Volunteer groups – the Red Cross, the national sea‑rescue service (SNSM), and animal‑care shelters – have been mobilised, providing logistics, medical aid and evacuation of hundreds of dogs and cats. Donations of food, bedding and other supplies have been organised by local authorities and civil‑society groups to support evacuees.
