Gironde Wildfire Forces Evacuation of 330,000 Across France and Spain FAST-MOVING
A massive wildfire that ignited near Saumos in the Gironde department of southwestern France has spread across more than 420 km² (about 42,000 ha) of forest and scrubland. The blaze destroyed roughly 240 homes, injured 93 firefighters and forced the evacuation of over 220,000 people from the Atlantic‑coastal tourist region around Bordeaux. An additional 4,000 residents were ordered to leave the Lacanau area as a precaution, bringing the total number of evacuees in France and neighboring Spain to about 330,000.
European Union assistance includes 11 water‑bombing aircraft deployed to France and six to Spain, while Germany sent two transport helicopters and an A400M cargo aircraft, and Turkey contributed two firefighting aircraft. The fire generated France’s first recorded pyrocumulonimbus cloud, which produced lightning that ignited new spot fires. President Emmanuel Macron described the incident as the worst in France since World War II and warned of “difficult weeks” ahead. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said there was “light at the end of the tunnel” but cautioned that a new heat wave with temperatures above 40 °C could worsen the situation.
