France wildfires trigger suspect arrest and nationwide heat alerts

French authorities arrested a 32‑year‑old man suspected of igniting multiple wildfires in the Var department near Marseille, which burned about 4,500 hectares between 19‑24 July. The arson charges include damage to forests and vegetation. The fires have forced the evacuation of more than 250,000 people, with roughly 220,000 displaced in the Gironde department. A firefighter from Saint‑Étienne‑du‑Gres died while battling the blaze.

As the heatwave continues, 65 French departments are under an orange fire‑alert, the second‑highest level, with temperatures forecast at 38‑41 °C and winds up to 45 km/h. Re‑ignitions have been reported in areas already affected, and about 2,000 firefighters remain on the ground. Officials warn residents in the Bordeaux area to stay ready for possible re‑evacuation.
