France wine industry faces worst harvest in 70 years due to heat

Extreme heat and drought in France have led to the country’s worst wine harvest in 70 years. The summer was recorded as the hottest since 1900, featuring 53 days of heatwaves and 40 percent less rainfall than usual.

In the Champagne region, high sugar levels caused by the rapid ripening of grapes have led authorities to grant producers a temporary dispensation, allowing for an alcohol content of up to 15 percent for the first time. The harvest began exceptionally early on August 12, creating labor shortages for the hand-harvesting process. Some producers reported yields as low as 1.5 tons per hectare, failing to meet the 8.8-ton quota.

Beyond Champagne, regions including Bordeaux, Burgundy, Alsace, and Cognac are heavily affected. Data from Agreste indicates that grape volumes in France have dropped by 28 percent compared to the five-year average. The crisis has forced some winemakers to face bankruptcy or to uproot their vineyards entirely.
