France withdraws carrier Charles de Gaulle from Hormuz Strait after US‑Iran pact

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on X that the carrier **Charles de Gaulle** is sailing back to its home port Toulon, ending its deployment in the Middle East. The warship had been sent to the Hormuz Strait to prepare for a multinational maritime‑security escort mission that France and the United Kingdom planned to lead. Macron said the recent memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, signed on 14 June, marked “significant progress for regional stability,” prompting the French Navy to adjust its posture. While the carrier returns, France will keep its mine‑countermeasure vessels and other naval assets in the area, ready to cooperate with allies if required. The move was noted alongside comments from U.S. President Donald Trump, who claimed Iran was “almost in agreement” on most nuclear‑negotiation points but stressed that Tehran must never acquire a nuclear weapon.
