France's 2026 Wildfire Response: Legal Clearing Rules, Corporate Fuel Aid and Pool‑Water Pump Innovation
Under the French Forest Code, landowners whose property lies within 200 m of woods, forests, moors or scrub must carry out targeted clearing (Obligations Légales de Débroussaillement). The rule requires a 50 m cleared zone around dwellings—extendable to 100 m by prefectural order—and a 10 m strip on either side of private access ways. In urban zones, the entire parcel must be kept cleared.
TotalEnergies announced that, from 1 July to 31 August 2026, it will fully cover the fuel used by French ground and aerial firefighting assets. The aid, provided as credits rather than cash, comes as the country battles fires that have already scorched 42 000 ha in the Gironde department, mobilising 3 300 firefighters, 1 500 military personnel and 1 250 police/gendarmes, with 72 reinforcement columns deployed nationwide.
PoolStar has introduced the “Pool Sam” motopump, a portable device that can draw up to 16 m³ / h of water from a private swimming pool to slow a fire’s spread. The pump is marketed as a supplemental measure for homeowners, not a substitute for professional fire services.
