France's Atlantic Coast Wildfires Prompt Massive Evacuations and International Aid

Wildfires raging along France's Atlantic coast near Bordeaux and the Arcachon basin have burned tens of thousands of hectares—authorities report up to 42,000 hectares of forest and brush destroyed. The blaze forced the evacuation of roughly 63,000 people from coastal towns and holiday sites, with more than 220,000 individuals ultimately taken to safety.

Around 1,500 firefighters, 2,750 fire crews from across France and other European nations, 1,500 soldiers, and 1,440 police officers have been deployed. A fleet of 18 water‑dropping aircraft and an A400M transport plane, supplied by Germany, were used to ferry firefighting equipment and create firebreaks. German assistance also included two transport helicopters.

The fires have damaged about 80 buildings, destroying roughly 50, and have injured one firefighter; no civilian casualties have been reported. Authorities expect a new heat wave with higher temperatures and lower humidity, prompting temporary bans on sport and cultural events in the region. As containment improves, about 15,000 evacuees have been allowed to return to their homes.
