Gironde wildfires near Bordeaux trigger evacuations and aid
A massive forest fire has raged through the Gironde department near Bordeaux, scorching roughly 42,000 ha of forest and scrub. The blaze has forced the evacuation of well over 300,000 residents across southwestern France and neighboring Spain, with some reports citing 250 000‑300 000 people displaced.
The fire has produced unprecedented pyrocumulonimbus clouds, creating its own weather system and intensifying spread. Smoke plumes have travelled northward, reaching Austria and other parts of central Europe.
International assistance has been mobilised. Croatia’s 855th firefighting squadron joined the effort on 24 July 2026 under the EU RescEU mission, completing 118 flights, 20 hours of airtime and dropping 576 tonnes of water. French President Emmanuel Macron thanked Croatia publicly on X. The Czech Republic also dispatched a Black Hawk helicopter to aid the operation.
France’s interior ministry is coordinating all foreign support. Meteorological services warn that a new heat wave could reignite the fire, which remains “autonomous and self‑sustaining” and may continue burning for weeks or months.
