France's giant banquets spark cultural and political debate

The rise of ‘banquets géants’ (giant banquets) across France has become a focal point in the country’s ongoing culture war. These mass feasts, organized by the private company Le Canon Français, celebrate French tradition through music, wine, and pork-heavy menus.

In the city of Bourges, critics and left-wing opponents have attempted to block these events, arguing that the emphasis on pork and patriotic themes serves to ostracize Muslim citizens. Opponents also point to the financial backing of ultra-conservative billionaire Pierre-Édouard Stérina as evidence of a hidden effort to promote far-right political interests ahead of upcoming presidential elections.

Organizers deny these allegations, maintaining that the banquets are simply modern provincial celebrations. While some critics have cited reports of racist behavior at other events, such as in Caen, the banquets continue to see high demand, with some large-scale iterations attracting up to 12,000 participants.
