Political controversy over French giant banquets

The organization Le Canon Français has sparked significant cultural and political debate in France through its ‘banquets géants’ (giant banquets). These mass events, which feature music, wine, and pork-heavy menus, have become a focal point in the country’s societal divisions ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Critics and left-wing opponents argue that the banquets’ patriotic themes and emphasis on pork serve to ostracize Muslim citizens. There are also allegations regarding the financial backing of the events by ultra-conservative billionaire Pierre-Édouard Stérina, which some view as an effort to promote far-right interests. Previous incidents at banquets in locations such as Caen have reportedly involved racist insults and Nazi salutes.

While political figures have sought to cancel specific events, such as a banquet in Colmar, organizers maintain that the gatherings are simply modern provincial celebrations. Despite the controversy, the banquets continue to see high demand, with some iterations attracting up to 12,000 participants.
