France deploys 70,000 police for July 14 holiday and World Cup semifinal

Ahead of the national holiday on 14 July, France is mobilising an unprecedented security operation. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced that around 70 000 police officers and gendarmes will be on duty nationwide, including about 5 000 in Paris to secure the military parade on the Champs‑Élysées and the surrounding areas. The deployment also covers the evening World Cup semifinal between France and Spain at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas, with additional forces positioned to manage crowds and possible disturbances.

The 14 July parade will feature a historic “strategic awakening of Europe” theme, with foreign contingents – including Ukrainian soldiers and units from the “Coalition of the Willing” – marching alongside French troops. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is slated to attend the ceremony, underscoring the event’s diplomatic significance.

Weather concerns have forced changes to fireworks programmes across several French cities, with some displays postponed or cancelled due to the heat wave. The combined security and ceremonial measures aim to ensure that both the national celebrations and the high‑profile football match proceed without incident.
