France Bastille Day parade backs Ukraine coalition
Overview
In early June 2026 France announced an expanded Bastille Day parade, inviting 37 countries to form a “Coalition of the Willing” in support of Ukraine. By mid‑July the parade featured over 8,500 participants, including 500 soldiers from 35 partner nations, 95 aircraft and 35 helicopters, linking historic French military pageantry with commitments to Ukrainian security.
A summit on 13‑14 July in Paris brought together more than 20 heads of state, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, to deepen the coalition. Leaders from Germany, Spain, Italy, Moldova, North Macedonia and others discussed expanding air‑defence and anti‑missile cooperation, licensing weapons production in Ukraine, and preparing a multinational force that could operate after a cease‑fire.
During the same weekend President Emmanuel Macron announced a doubling of France’s defence budget over the next ten years and unveiled new defence initiatives and joint exercises, framing the event as a symbolic “wake‑up” of Europe. The July 14 parade opened with 500 coalition troops, creating a record‑size procession of about 6,800 participants, with Ukrainian units marching alongside French forces.
Macron’s formal address to the armed forces on 15 July at the Hôtel de Brienne was his sole public appearance before the 2027 election, underscoring the coalition’s visible commitment to Kyiv and signaling continued pressure on Russia.
