More than 220,000 residents of the Gironde department near Bordeaux have been evacuated as a giant wildfire rages, bringing the total number of people displaced in France and Spain to over 300,000. The blaze has consumed about 42,000 ha in Gironde and an additional 3,600 ha in the neighbouring Landes region, while central‑Spain fires have scorched roughly 77,000 ha across Madrid, Ávila and Toledo.

The fire generated a pyrocumulonimbus cloud that created its own wind, making the blaze erratic and difficult to control. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described the situation as “unprecedented” and said the fire was not under control. President Emmanuel Macron ordered the mobilisation of the French army, including an Airbus A400M transport aircraft that dropped water on the fire.
