Monte Erice Hillclimb: Two spectators killed in racing accident
A fatal accident occurred during the 68th Monte Erice Hillclimb in Sicily, resulting in the deaths of two young spectators, Giuseppe Bisconti (18) and Karol Greco (20). The incident took place at post station number 9 during the TCR group departures.
A Peugeot 308 TCR, number 54, driven by Marco Nicoletti, lost control and veered off the track, crashing through a protective wall and into the spectator area. Nicoletti, who was uninjured, is currently under investigation by the Trapani prosecutor for vehicular homicide. Investigators are examining a potential mechanical failure, specifically regarding the braking system, as a possible cause.
In addition to the two fatalities, race marshal Mario Marchetti was seriously injured and remains in intensive care at the Sant’Antonio Abate hospital in Trapani. The competition, organized by the Automobile Club Trapani, was immediately suspended and subsequently cancelled by the sports commission. The event was part of several championships, including the Italian Mountain Speed Championship. Local authorities in Belmonte Mezzagno have declared a period of mourning.
