Fatal accident at 68th Monte Erice Hillclimb

Overview

The 68th Monte Erice hill climb, organized by the Automobile Club Trapani, was marred by a fatal accident near station number 9 on the route from Valderice to Erice. During the event, which included the second edition of the Salvatore Morselli Award, a Peugeot 308 TCR (car number 54) driven by Marco Nicoletti lost control and veered off the track, crashing through a protective wall into the spectator area.

The crash resulted in the deaths of two young spectators from Belmonte Mezzagno, identified as 18-year-old Giuseppe Bisconti and 20-year-old Karol Greco. Additionally, a race marshal, Mario Marchetti, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Sant’Antonio Abate hospital in Trapani, where he remains in intensive care. The driver, Nicoletti, was reported uninjured but in a state of shock.

Following the incident, the competition was suspended and subsequently cancelled. The Trapani prosecutor's office has placed Nicoletti under investigation for vehicular homicide. Investigators are examining the vehicle's black box and investigating potential mechanical failures, such as brake malfunctions, noting that no skid marks were found on the asphalt. Technical experts are also evaluating the adequacy of the safety barriers and the positioning of spectators relative to the track. Local authorities in Erice and Belmonte Mezzagno have declared periods of mourning.
