Franciacorta winemakers advance grape harvest due to extreme heat

Extreme heat and low rainfall in northern Italy are forcing winemakers in the Franciacorta region to harvest grapes earlier than usual. The rising temperatures accelerate the ripening process, leaving producers with a narrower window to harvest if they wish to maintain the acidity and delicate aromas essential for high-quality sparkling wines.

To adapt to these changing conditions, many producers are shifting to nighttime harvesting. This practice helps preserve fruit quality by working in lower temperatures and reducing heat stress on the grapes before they reach the winery.

Beyond adjusting harvest schedules, viticulturists are implementing new techniques to help vineyards withstand heat and drought. These methods include managing soil and vegetation cover, as well as canopy management. Agricultural specialists and scientists are also working to monitor meteorological effects on vineyards to develop long-term strategies for sustaining production levels.
