Heatwave drives early harvests in Italy and France
Entities: Coldiretti · Italy · Oltrepo Pavese (Lombardy, Italy) · Ottavia Vistarino · Conte Vistarino
Overview
The 2026 summer heatwave continues to compress the wine calendar across Italy and now parts of southern France. In Lombardy’s Oltrepò Pavese the harvest began in late July, marking the first July picking on record, while Franciacorta also started on 30 July. Abruzzo followed on 3 August, and growers in Veneto, Cuneo and other Italian provinces are harvesting ten to fifteen days ahead of the usual September schedule. Hail storms have damaged 30‑40 % of vines in some Lombardy sites.
In France’s Aude department and the Pyrénées‑Orientales, viticulturists reported their first July harvests. Fitou appellation president Alain Gleyzes began picking Moscato on 30 July after a severe drought that killed about 30 % of his vines, and other growers such as the Lalaurie twins and the Lafage estate started roughly a week to ten days early.
Champagne’s inter‑professional body Réseau Matu still expects the vintage to begin between 20 and 25 August, at least twelve days earlier than recent years. Regional officials and Coldiretti groups continue to warn that extreme heat, hail, and limited water threaten yields and quality, urging climate‑adaptation measures, financial support and innovative tools for producers.
