Frank Zappa’s ‘Freak Out!’ 60th‑Anniversary Reissue Set for September Release
Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention’s 1966 debut album Freak Out! will be reissued as a 60th‑anniversary edition on September 25. The collection will be offered in multiple formats, including standard CD, vinyl, digital, and a Super Deluxe package that contains five CDs and one Blu‑ray disc.
The Super Deluxe set features a newly remastered stereo mix, a pre‑master mix derived from 1966 tapes, and the first full‑album mono mix of Freak Out! that has never been released before. It adds roughly 90 rare live and studio tracks, among them two full performances recorded at San Francisco’s Fillmore Auditorium on June 24‑25 1966, plus rehearsals, demos, vocal references and outtakes. The Blu‑ray also includes the stereo mix and a bonus track titled “Groupie Bang Bang.” A 26‑page booklet with archival photos and new essays by Ray Leong, journalist Jason Pettigrew and “vaultmeister” Joe Travers accompanies the release. The original album was credited by Paul McCartney as an influence on the Beatles’ concept album Sgt. Pepper’s.
