Frankfurt approves heat plan to double district heating network by 2040

The Frankfurt city parliament has approved a municipal heat planning strategy aimed at ensuring a climate-friendly heat supply by 2045. Currently, nearly 60 percent of the city's heating and hot water needs are met by fossil natural gas.

As part of this transition, the energy provider Mainova plans to double the existing district heating network from 310 kilometers to 620 kilometers by 2040. This expansion is intended to increase the share of district heating in the city's total heat supply from 25 percent to 40 percent.

In cooperation with the city, Mainova has agreed to connect 60 municipal properties to the district heating network by 2030, with the Hellerhofschule serving as the first location under this agreement.
