Frankfurt Book Fair survey reveals consumer attitudes toward AI in publishing
At the Frankfurt Book Fair, a survey conducted by BoD and the market research institute Appinio revealed varying levels of consumer acceptance regarding artificial intelligence in book production.
According to the data, 49.5 percent of respondents would purchase a book if AI tools were used only for supportive purposes, such as text correction or cover creation. Additionally, 30 percent stated they would read a book that was entirely created using AI tools. Only 20.5 percent of those surveyed expressed a preference for books created without any AI involvement.
Regarding transparency, 83.1 percent of participants supported the implementation of a label on books to clearly indicate the use of AI during the creation process. Critics note that the survey measures intent rather than actual purchasing behavior and that the distinction between supportive tools and full automation remains a point of contention for industry professionals.
