Frankfurt Book Fair 2026 preparations

Preparations for the 78th Frankfurt Book Fair, scheduled for October 7–11, 2026, have progressed with announcements regarding media coverage, guest attendance, and logistical changes.

The broadcaster 3sat announced a dedicated programming weekend, including a literary gala titled ‘Buchzeit – Die Literaturgala’ on October 10. The coverage will feature daily livestreams, discussions on new releases, and presentations of the German Book Prize and the ‘aspekte’ Literature Prize. The Czech Republic is the designated guest country for the fair.

Organizers have confirmed a high-profile guest list including former German ministers Robert Habeck and Karl Lauterbach, alongside authors such as Colson Whitehead and Sebastian Fitzek. The event, which will be the final edition overseen by Director Juergen Boos, intends to emphasize personal encounters between authors and readers through a restructured hall concept to counter the influence of digital algorithms.

Recent updates indicate the fair will feature a restructured layout necessitated by structural issues in Hall 6. This reorganization will relocate approximately 500 international publishers and various literary rights centers to different halls. The event is expected to host over 200,000 visitors and 4,000 exhibitors, with a program consisting of 2,300 events.

While the fair focuses on the evolution of rights from print to streaming and film, artificial intelligence remains a central theme. Sessions will address AI in academic publishing, its cultural impact, and its use in the Asian publishing market. Additionally, the Frankfurt Rights Meeting will celebrate its 40th anniversary. Following Juergen Boos, Joachim Kaufmann is set to succeed him as Director.
