Socialist Party meeting in Blois centers on 2027 presidential primary

The French Socialist Party (PS) held its summer universities in Blois, a gathering heavily dominated by discussions regarding the 2027 presidential election and the upcoming left-wing primary. The primary, organized alongside Place publique and the Gauche républicaine et socialiste, is scheduled for October 2024.

Raphaël Glucksmann has emerged as a frontrunner, receiving significant support from figures such as Boris Vallaud and various regional leaders. In contrast, PS leader Olivier Faure faces internal pressure; while he has called for party unity, his own candidacy remains a subject of speculation amidst polling that shows Glucksmann holding a lead.

Former President François Hollande has declined invitations to participate in the primary process. He expressed concerns that the current procedure might cause more division than unity and noted that the timing is too early. However, Hollande indicated he may consider a candidacy for the presidency of France if the political situation requires it by the end of the year, aiming for a broader national movement rather than a strictly partisan one.
