French left split, primary terms set for 2027

Overview

As the 2027 presidential election approaches, the social-democratic left is formalizing its primary process. The Socialist Party and Place Publique have ratified an agreement for a two-round electronic vote to be held in October 2024. Current declared candidates include Raphaël Glucksmann, Ségolène Royal, Philippe Brun, and Jérôme Guedj, with the Gauche républicaine et socialiste (GRS) also participating. During the Socialist Party’s summer universities in Blois, Raphaël Glucksmann emerged as a frontrunner, gaining support from Socialist MP Boris Vallaud and various regional leaders. This momentum has placed internal pressure on Socialist leader Olivier Faure; while Faure has called for party unity, his own potential candidacy remains a subject of speculation as polling shows Glucksmann leading. Emmanuel Maurel, a deputy for Val-d’Oise and former leader of the Socialist Party’s left wing, has officially announced his candidacy for the October primary under the investment of the GRS. Maurel intends to focus on defending workers' rights and halting French decline. Former President François Hollande continues to distance himself from the primary process, expressing concerns that the procedure might ‘cause more division than unity’. Instead, he is promoting his new book, ‘Unir. Nouveau monde, nouvelle gauche’, which contains nearly 100 reformist proposals. While he has not formally declared his candidacy, Hollande admitted he is effectively ‘already in campaign’ and aims to build a ‘sacred union of democrats’ to counter political extremes. Organizers have recently announced a schedule of three televised debates for late September and early October. However, the process faces internal friction regarding candidate eligibility. Carole Delga, President of the Occitanie region and a supporter of Glucksmann, has rejected the participation of François Ruffin, arguing his movement does not fall within the required ‘European socialist pole’.
