Fraser River sockeye salmon openings unlikely due to low returns

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) has announced that recreational and commercial sockeye salmon openings on the Fraser River are highly unlikely for the 2026 season. While earlier forecasts predicted a significant run—with a mid-point estimate of 7.74 million fish—recent in-season data indicates a much lower abundance of less than 2.8 million.

The decline in salmon numbers is attributed to several environmental factors, including wildfires, drought, lower-than-average snowpack, and strengthening El Nino conditions in the Pacific Ocean.

DFO stated that First Nations food, social, and ceremonial fisheries remain the top priority. Management decisions will continue to be based on real-time in-season data rather than pre-season forecasts. If abundance levels rise above established thresholds, fisheries may resume later in the season.
