Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) attributed this decline to environmental factors such as wildfires, drought, low snowpack, and El Nino conditions. Consequently, recreational and commercial openings are highly unlikely for the 2026 season, with priority given to First Nations food, social, and ceremonial needs.

To manage potential social friction and disputes arising from these shortages, the RCMP and DFO are increasing their presence on the Fraser River. Law enforcement, including the Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment (UFVRD) Indigenous Policing Services, is monitoring the area to conduct ‘peacekeeping efforts’ as tensions can arise when Indigenous traditional fishing is permitted while sport fishing remains closed.
