Fraud prevention initiatives launched in Ragusa amid rising cyber scams
Authorities and cybersecurity experts are highlighting various methods used in modern fraud campaigns. In Ragusa, Italy, the Municipality and the local Police Headquarters have launched the ‘Disconnetti la truffa’ (Disconnect the Scam) campaign. This initiative aims to educate citizens on identifying and preventing diverse scams, including phishing, fake e-commerce sites, SMS scams, and telephone fraud, through digital awareness tools and practical advice.
Simultaneously, cybersecurity researchers at Malwarebytes have identified a sophisticated online scam campaign involving fraudulent antivirus renewal pages. The campaign impersonates Avast by using highly convincing, potentially AI-generated web pages that claim an Avast Premium Security subscription is due for renewal. These pages use professional layouts to trick users into filling out cancellation forms. The primary goal is to harvest names and phone numbers, which scammers then use to conduct follow-up telephone scams by posing as customer service representatives.
