Police raids intensify and senior fraud crackdown
Overview
The multi-agency operation that began in early June 2024 has broadened to tackle both organised crime and a wave of scams aimed at Italy’s elderly. In May 2026, the Carabinieri uncovered dozens of telephone-fraud schemes across the Marche-Campania corridor and other towns, arresting suspects and recovering valuables. Subsequent arrests in various locations followed the same pattern of impersonating police, finance officers, or magistrates. Local authorities paired enforcement with prevention, including digital-literacy training and public awareness campaigns. Parallel to the fraud fight, coordinated raids in June 2026 involving the State Police, Carabinieri, and Guardia di Finanza seized drugs and illegal waste, while a preventive seizure in Teverola targeted a €30 million illegal-lotting network. By July-August 2026, the pattern of impersonation scams persisted in Rome, Ischia, and San Marino. In late July, law enforcement intensified protection efforts for seniors through community outreach in Treviso, Catania, and Forlì. Specific incidents included an arrest in Formia for a relative-impersonation scam, thwarted extortion attempts in Siracusa, and the interception of a €98,000 fraudulent bank transfer in Latina. Further reports in August indicate a surge in diverse fraudulent schemes. In Salerno, investigations revealed the fraudulent use of digital signatures for unauthorized company appointments, causing significant tax losses. In Frosinone, a man was placed under arrest for using forged documents and a cloned check to buy a luxury vehicle. Other incidents include cryptocurrency and AI-driven financial scams in Altare and Sorbolo Mezzani, as well as social engineering attempts in Milan and Imola. In Bolzano, an individual was arrested for impersonating a Carabinieri officer to steal gold jewelry. Additionally, authorities in Cefalù identified an international tax evasion system involving fictitious UK companies used to transfer over €1.3 million in undeclared revenue. By late August 2026, law enforcement reported a continued surge in scams targeting vulnerable populations.
