European authorities warn of rising financial fraud and identity theft
Financial regulators and law enforcement agencies across Europe are issuing warnings regarding a surge in sophisticated fraud schemes targeting individuals, particularly the elderly.
In the financial sector, authorities in Austria, the UK, and Luxembourg have warned of fake brokers and identity theft. Criminals are increasingly impersonating legitimate, regulated companies to deceive investors. The Austrian FMA specifically warned against Evolve Asia for providing unauthorized services.
In Germany, police have reported numerous incidents of social engineering. These include ‘shock calls’ where scammers impersonate officials or relatives in distress to extort cash, and ‘bank employee’ scams where victims are manipulated into handing over PINs or debit cards. Other methods include impersonating utility workers to gain entry to homes or using phishing emails to steal banking credentials.
Additional reports highlight diverse criminal tactics, such as romance scams involving AI-generated identities, jewelry theft through physical distraction, and fraudulent online used-car advertisements. Authorities advise the public to remain skeptical of unsolicited contact, verify identities through official channels, and never share sensitive financial information or cash with strangers.
