Fraudsters use fake bank advisors and couriers to steal banking data

Authorities in France and Luxembourg are warning the public about a sophisticated two-step scam involving impersonation of bank advisors and couriers.

In the scheme, fraudsters contact victims by phone, posing as bank employees who claim to detect fraudulent activity on the account. To gain trust, they instruct the victim to cut their bank card in half while keeping the chip intact. A fake courier then visits the victim's home to collect the card. Once obtained, the criminals execute unauthorized withdrawals or debits.

Similar incidents have been reported involving impersonation of LuxTrust or other service providers. In one case, a victim received a fraudulent email regarding Wero, leading to a phone call from a person claiming to be a LuxTrust employee. The individual attempted to collect bank cards, PIN codes, and even jewelry from the victim's home.

Police and law enforcement agencies advise the public never to hand over bank cards, PIN codes, or access data to strangers. They emphasize that legitimate banks and service providers will never send representatives to a home to collect bank cards or valuables. If suspicious contact occurs, individuals should hang up and contact their bank directly using official numbers.
