European identity and banking impersonation scams
Overview
Authorities in Lithuania, France, and Luxembourg have issued warnings regarding sophisticated impersonation scams targeting personal and financial data.
In Lithuania, scammers have been impersonating couriers and officials from the State Social Insurance Fund (Sodra) to solicit personal identification codes and sensitive information. Sodra clarified that official correspondence is only sent via registered mail through specific carriers, which do not request passwords or bank details.
In France and Luxembourg, a two-step scheme has been identified where fraudsters pose as bank advisors claiming to detect fraudulent activity. Victims are instructed to cut their bank cards in half while preserving the chip, after which a fake courier arrives to collect the card for unauthorized withdrawals. Similar tactics involve impersonating service providers like LuxTrust to solicit PIN codes and even physical valuables.
