Fraudulent digital tactics evolve to target travel and businesses

Fraudulent activities are becoming increasingly sophisticated, targeting both individuals and businesses through evolving digital tactics. In the travel sector, a report from Riskified indicates that fraudsters are adapting faster than traditional security signals can detect. Analysis shows that flight fraud risk saw a significant year-over-year increase of 32% in May 2026.

These sophisticated fraud rings are increasingly mimicking legitimate traveler behavior, making traditional identity indicators less reliable. For example, transactions where the billing name matches the passenger name have seen a notable increase in risk. Additionally, last-minute flight bookings made within seven days of departure remain 2.3 times riskier than other transactions.

On a broader scale, online scams often utilize psychological triggers such as urgency, fear, or the promise of unexpected prizes to deceive victims. To combat these threats, businesses are increasingly adopting ‘Zero Trust’ security frameworks, which operate on the principle of verifying every access request regardless of its origin.
