Cybersecurity and privacy risks for travelers

Overview

Travelers face escalating digital and physical security threats, characterized by increasingly sophisticated impersonation and fraud tactics. Research identified approximately 262,663 malicious detections targeting travel brands between mid-2025 and early 2026. These attacks frequently utilize phishing, fake applications, and ‘Trojan-Bankers’ to steal banking credentials. Major brands are often impersonated, with Emirates accounting for 61% of transport-related detections and Uber for 37%.

In the United States, data indicates that over 40% of Americans have been victims of online scams, such as fake property listings or fraudulent compensation offers, with average losses approaching $2,000. Tactics include unusually low-priced deals or fraudulent payouts, such as a scam impersonating Ryanair. Financial experts advise avoiding non-reversible payment methods like wire transfers, gift cards, or cryptocurrency.

Highly targeted phishing attacks are also utilizing accurate reservation data. In South Africa, cybercriminals have used specific guest names, travel dates, and accommodation details to send fraudulent messages via email and WhatsApp, often using the threat of booking cancellations to pressure victims. The South African Travel and Tourism Association (SATSA) linked these incidents to a data-related issue involving Semper, a property-management software provider.

Furthermore, fraud rings are evolving to mimic legitimate traveler behavior, making traditional identity indicators less reliable. A report from Riskified noted a 32% year-over-year increase in flight fraud risk as of May 2026. Specifically, last-minute flight bookings made within seven days of departure were found to be 2.3 times riskier than other transactions. In response, businesses are increasingly adopting ‘Zero Trust’ security frameworks.
