Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf addresses failed constitutional court appointment

Jurist Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf is reflecting on the controversy surrounding her failed appointment to the German Federal Constitutional Court. Nominated by the SPD in 2025, Brosius-Gersdorf ultimately withdrew her candidacy following intense political and social campaigns against her, an event she describes as a “stress test for democracy.”

She warns that without reform to the judicial selection process, Germany risks facing political volatility similar to Supreme Court appointment battles in the United States. Brosius-Gersdorf is now advocating for reforms to the judge selection system to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
