Fraunhofer IGD launches Baltic Brain GPU cluster for AI research

Fraunhofer IGD and GSI/FAIR have launched a new high-performance GPU cluster named ‘Baltic Brain’ to strengthen artificial intelligence and high-performance computing research in Germany.

The cluster, which features 24 NVIDIA B200 GPUs, is hosted at the energy-efficient Green IT Cube at GSI/FAIR in Darmstadt. This infrastructure is designed to support data-sovereign research, allowing for the training of complex AI models on domestic hardware. This capability aims to reduce reliance on international service providers and ensure that sensitive data can be processed within controlled research environments.

According to Dr. Matthias Unbescheiden, Director of Fraunhofer IGD, the infrastructure is intended to bolster technological sovereignty and innovation. Initial pilot applications for the cluster are currently being developed in the fields of maritime research, geodata analysis, and bioeconomy.
