German AI and high-performance computing expansion

Overview

Germany is expanding its high-performance computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure through both research and commercial initiatives.

In August 2026, Fraunhofer IGD and GSI/FAIR launched the ‘Baltic Brain’ GPU cluster in Darmstadt. Utilizing 24 NVIDIA B200 GPUs, the cluster aims to support data-sovereign research in fields such as maritime research and bioeconomy, reducing reliance on international service providers.

Concurrently, Schwarz Digits announced an 11 billion euro investment to convert a former power plant in Lübbenau, Brandenburg, into a massive AI data center. This facility is planned to house approximately 100,000 GPUs to facilitate rapid AI model training and provide secure data control for both the Schwarz Group and external clients, such as the Baden-Württemberg Police.
