Frechen withdraws from Germany's Stadtradeln bike challenge over budget

In the German town of Schweinfurt, the community‑run Stadtradeln competition has attracted nearly 1,000 participants who have logged almost 140,000 kilometres in two weeks, with the ecumenical team “Glaube bewegt” currently placed 10th out of 61 teams.

Meanwhile, the city of Frechen has announced it will not take part in this year’s Stadtradeln campaign, citing a “desolate” municipal budget that leaves no funding for the event despite subsidies. In the previous year, about 400 Frechen residents rode roughly 60,000 kilometres, reportedly cutting carbon emissions by ten tonnes. Other nearby cities such as Brühl, Wesseling, Kerpen, Elsdorf and Pulheim continue to compete in the nationwide bicycle‑driven climate initiative.
