Mary Austin reveals new insights into Freddie Mercury’s life and legacy

Mary Austin, the longtime confidante and former fiancée of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, has shared new insights into the singer’s life and legacy. A forthcoming book, ‘A Life in Lyrics: The Official Creative Legacy of Freddie Mercury’, will feature previously unseen handwritten manuscripts, sketches, and lyrics from Mercury’s archives, including early drafts of hits like ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.

In recent interviews, Austin has reflected on their complex relationship, which transitioned from a romantic engagement in the 1970s to a deep friendship that lasted until Mercury’s death from AIDS-related complications in 1991. She described Mercury as a man who used bravado to protect his true self and noted how he sought acceptance in places like New York and Munich to escape the intense scrutiny of the British media.

Austin also addressed the management of Mercury’s estate, including his London residence, Garden Lodge. She noted the difficulties of handling his significant inheritance and clarified that Mercury’s wish was for his home not to become a museum. Additionally, Austin has dismissed claims regarding a ‘secret daughter’, stating that Mercury never mentioned fathering a child to those closest to him.
