Publications regarding Freddie Mercury's life

New literary and historical works have been released focusing on the life and creative legacy of Freddie Mercury.

In August 2026, Vincenzo Furfaro published ‘Mi chiamo Farrokh’, a novel that explores the formative years and identity of Farrokh Bulsara before his fame with Queen. The work seeks to focus on the individual rather than the myth, as the preface states, ‘Vincenzo doesn’t simply tell the story of Freddie Mercury. He tells the story of Farrokh.’

Later in the month, HarperCollins released ‘A Life in Lyrics: The Official Creative Legacy of Freddie Mercury’. This volume compiles handwritten notes, sketches, and manuscripts from 1969 onwards, including original drafts for songs such as ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. Featuring contributions from Mary Austin, the book details Mercury’s transition from Bulsara to his stage name, his Parsi roots, and his artistic interests in costume design and drawing.

Mary Austin, Mercury’s former fiancée and lifelong confidante, has provided further context regarding his personal life and estate. Reflecting on their relationship, Austin described their connection as a ‘marriage in spirit’, noting that while they were engaged in the 1970s, their bond transitioned into a deep friendship as he explored his sexuality. She noted that Mercury left her the majority of his estate, including Garden Lodge, a decision she reportedly initially resisted.

Austin has also addressed the intense media presence outside Garden Lodge during Mercury’s final weeks, recalling photographers waiting like “vultures”. She has highlighted his musical genius, including his four-octave vocal range, and noted that his death in 1991 remains a pivotal moment for global awareness of the AIDS crisis.
