Frederikssund begins coastal protection project against storm surges

Frederikssund Municipality has launched a major coastal protection project to safeguard the town center and harbor from storm surges originating from Roskilde Fjord. The initiative follows years of planning and aims to replace temporary measures, such as sandbags and water tubes, with a permanent solution designed to protect the area for many years.

Construction is scheduled to begin in September 2026, with an expected completion date in the summer of 2027. The project will be executed in stages to minimize local disruption. In addition to flood defense, the development includes urban improvements such as new green spaces, integrated art, and enhanced public areas to create a more attractive harbor environment.

During the construction period, residents and commuters should expect noise, increased heavy vehicle traffic, and changes to pedestrian, cycling, and driving routes. The municipality has stated it will attempt to limit the impact on local businesses and residents, providing direct information via Digital Post to those living or working near active construction zones.
